Friday, July 11 is a big day for Apple Inc.  That’s the day that the new iPhone 3G comes out.  This is what’s going to be released during this week:

• New iPhone 3G with GPS (Available in Black or White)
• 2.0 Software for iPhone and iPod Touch (Supports Microsoft Exchange)
• App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch
• Mac OS 10.5.4 (Available now as an update)

On June 29, 2008, I rode The Dominator at Kings Dominion, which is the world’s longest roller coaster.  It was the coolest ride I’ve ever ridden on. You should try it out.

This book cover was my final exam project that I had to do in Graphic Communications. I did this because weather is one of my favorite subjects especially hurricanes and tornadoes. It’s that time of year again for hurricanes.  The 2008 hurricane season has officially begun.  According to the National Hurricane Center, three of the 2007 storm names have retired.  They are: Dean, Felix, and Noel.  They were the most devastating hurricanes that year.  Dorian, Fernand, and Nestor are the new names.

This year’s hurricane forecast is: 13 named storms (Tropical Storm or Hurricane), 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

DON’T EVER PAY ATTENTION TO THE PREDICTIONS, because anything can happen.  Just like in 2006, they predicted a lot of named storms, because 2005 had a lot, but 2006 was the exact opposite of 2005.  There were a lot less named storms in 2006.

The 2008 Atlantic Named Storms:  Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, Ike, Josephine, Kyle, Laura, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paloma, Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, and Wilfred.  Hopefully we don’t use all of these names.

In this picture, there are a lot of cool weather things going on.  There is a tornado sucking up leaves and two computers.  The lightning strike is causing a fire in the trees.  There’s also a butterfly and a ladybug in the grass.  The house is about to be torn down by the tornado too.  I did this picture in Adobe Illustrator at school when i got bored.  You may click on the picture if you want to keep a copy for yourself.

This is my Salsa Label project that I did in Graphic Communications.  You can tell that this is a really hot salsa by the slogan and the colors.  The white space is where the Nutrition Facts would go.  You may download this image by clicking on the photo.  This allows you to view it at full size.

Backing up can be done many ways. You can back up with an external storage device or you can use optical discs. It really depends on how much data you have on your computer.

There are two kinds of external storage devices. There are flash drives and there are external hard drives. You should use a flash drive if you have hardly any files on your computer. This is for people who rarely use a computer. The cost of flash drives varies. They can range from $5 to $100 or more. The storage can range from 64 megabytes to 8 gigabytes.

External hard drives are the most popular way to backup data. It’s much faster than optical discs. This is for people who have a whole lot of data on their computers. Hard drives come with any of these ports: USB is the most popular, which transfer speeds at 480 Mb/s (Megabits per second) or 60 MB/s (Megabytes per second). Also there’s FireWire 400 and 800, which is more popular with Macs. Finally, there’s the rare eSATA, which transfer data at a much higher rate. The cost can range from $50 to thousands of dollars. The storage space can go up to a terabyte or more. There are many software programs that back up your stuff automatically. For example: Time Machine with Mac OS Leopard. It backs up your whole computer to any hard drive. You can restore your Mac back to where it was before your hard drive failed.

Lastly, there are optical discs: CDs and DVDs. If you are backing up I would suggest using DVDs. They hold 4.7 GB. CDs only hold 700 MB. This is good if you can’t afford an external hard drive. This is the slowest way to backup. The more stuff you put on a disc, the longer it will take to burn.  Before you back up to a DVD, I suggest making a checklist of what you should backup, just in case you forget to backup something.

Backing up is one the most important thing you should ever do if you have a computer. You never know when your hard drive is going to fail on you. If you never back up and your hard drive dies on you, all of your precious files will disappear. Your memorable photos, important documents, movies of your favorite vacation, childhood memories, etc. will just disappear and will never come back. No one wants that to happen. Losing your files is just like losing a friend or family member. Just think about that.

When my hard drive failed, I was working on a Keynote project for Spanish. It was backed up on my flash drive. All of a sudden, I got this . This is what you get when you and application doesn’t respond. In my case, the whole computer didn’t respond. I also heard clicking noises where my hard drive was. Then I knew that it was hard drive failure. It’s a good thing I backed up several weeks ago and had my project on my flash drive. A few days later we took it back to the Apple store. It took them several days to replace the hard drive. For my project, I used my cousin’s laptop. It took me a while trying to get back to normal from starting over.
